January 24 - Cardinal
Our house is somewhat in a forest and backs up to seven acres of trees so we have quite a few birds in the neighborhood. I've seen this cardinal a few times but he is quite elusive and rarely comes close to house, so this is the first good shot I've gotten of him, but I'm not in love it. Like the eye contact but you can't really see the crest on top of his head. Plus the the lighting is pretty harsh so you can't really tell just how red he is. He stands out in the brown trees like a sore thumb!
This is shot with Canon 1D Mark 3, 500mm F/4 lens with a 12mm extension tube to cut the minimum focusing distance down a bit. It's bitterly cold this week and is supposed to snow tomorrow. Check out the full 365 gallery here.
